About

Made for students, by someone in the same boat.

Why it exists

Studying for the NCLEX should not depend on how much you can spend. NurseLumen is a free, independent study tool, with a Canadian and a US version, and open to everyone who is preparing for the NCLEX-RN.

I'm a former programmer, now in nursing school. When I started preparing for the NCLEX, I was struck by how much of the prep is sold at a premium, often to students who are already stretched by tuition, clinicals and shifts. Good practice should not depend on what you can afford. So I built the study tool I wanted: free, private, and honest about what practice scores mean.

Independent, and not a substitute for official sources

NurseLumen is not affiliated with or endorsed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. (NCSBN), and it is not connected to any regulator. NCLEX and NCLEX-RN are registered trademarks of the NCSBN. For the rules of the exam, registration and results, always use nclex.com and your own regulator.

How content is made and checked

  • Sources are shown. Every item lists where its facts come from.
  • Licences are shown. Material is either original or used under a licence that allows it, and the licence is listed on the item.
  • Review is labelled honestly. Items checked by a qualified educator say who checked them and when. Anything not yet reviewed is marked as a draft.
  • Your country's version. Choose Canada or the United States, and items show that country's drug names, units and notes wherever they differ. Where practice or regulation differs in Canada, the item says so. Switch at any time from the app's menu or Settings.

What practice scores mean

Scores in NurseLumen are feedback for your own studying. Partial credit is calculated by NurseLumen's own method, not the NCSBN's, and nothing here predicts how you will do on the exam.

Accessibility

NurseLumen is built to work with a keyboard and a screen reader, and every colour mood, in light and dark, is checked against WCAG 2.1 AA contrast. You can enlarge the text, switch to Atkinson Hyperlegible (a font designed for easy reading), relax the line spacing, turn motion off, and have questions read aloud. If anything gets in your way, please tell us and we will fix it.
